Frequently Asked Questions

What are options on futures?

Options on futures are contracts that give traders the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a futures contract at a specific price before it expires. They allow traders to manage risk, hedge positions, or take advantage of market opportunities using less capital.

What happens when a futures option is exercised?

When a long call is exercised, the holder receives a long position in the underlying futures contract at the strike price. When a long put is exercised, the holder receives a short futures position. Most traders close options positions before expiration rather than exercising them.

How are options on futures different from stock options?

Options on futures are settled into a futures contract upon exercise, not shares of stock. They trade on regulated futures exchanges under CFTC oversight. Margin treatment, expiration mechanics, and contract specifications differ from equity options.

Which contracts are available for options trading on MetroTrade?

MetroTrade offers options on the most actively traded CME-listed contracts, including E-mini S&P 500 (ES), Nasdaq-100 (NQ), crude oil (CL), and gold (GC).

Can I use long puts to hedge an existing futures position?

Yes. Buying a put on a contract where you hold a long futures position gives you downside protection through a risk event without closing the trade. The put acts as a floor on your loss if the underlying moves against you before expiration.

Do I need a separate account to trade options on futures?

No. Options on futures are available directly inside your existing MetroTrade live account. Positions are visible alongside your futures trades in the same dashboard.

Can I practice trading futures options before going live?

Yes. MetroTrade’s 30-day demo account gives you access to MetroTrader with simulated data. You can practice options order entry and position management before committing real capital.
